Bigil movie reviews: What media has to say about the Vijay’s latest flick?

Published

Bigil

The much-anticipated Bigil starting Vijay and Nayanthara released worldwide today. The film opened to mixed reviews with fans took to Twitter and revealed their impressions. Meanwhile, the fans suppossed to be that of ajith have been trolling Bigil with the hashtag #BigilDisaster. The 180-crore Bigil movie also features comedian Vivek, Kathir, Jackie Shroff, Amritha Aiyer, Reba Monica John and Varsha Bollamma. We have compiled the reviews published by leading media houses.

Vijay starrer is a sports drama with a cause

Atlee’s third film with Vijay is a sports drama that is stitched from the same cloth as Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! But what sets Bigil apart is its treatment and scale that’s well justified by the overall vision, and Atlee understands what the masses love like no other contemporary commercial filmmaker. Despite a problematic first half except for a few scenes, Bigil redeems itself big time with a strong and emotionally rewarding second half. Bigil features a sub plot about women empowerment and features an acid attack survivor as one of the players in the team. The whole acid attack stretch, featuring Reba Monica John, is sensibly pulled off and it resonates strongly when we see her return to playing after the traumatic incident. When it comes to the performances, Vijay holds the film together and especially as Rayappan, an aged gangster, he breathes swag and plays his part more confidently than ever. However, as Michael, the former player and coach, he doesn’t quite impress as much as Rayappan. Bigil is excruciatingly long and if not for the football portion which is executed on a grand scale and visuals, the film would’ve struggled to stay afloat.

The Major Letdown

With Bigil, the major letdown is the story and its lengthy runtime (2 hours and 58 minutes). Even with three hours to itself, the film does not delve deep into the lives of the characters, which makes it difficult to empathise with them. Most of the things are ‘told’ on screen and they’re never shown. Perhaps, Atlee and several other directors forget that this is a visual medium and that some things are better left unsaid. But Atlee gets a lot of things right as well. Bigil is a delight for Vijay’s fans and Atlee’s trademark style of glorifying his ‘annan’ is visible throughout. The filmmaker adds a lot of references to Vijay’s earlier films and his own previous ventures, which are nice to spot.

Atlee gifts Vijay a kickass Diwali blockbuster

Vijay-starrer Bigil is a sports drama with Tamil Nadu women’s football team at the forefront. Any sports drama ends with the victory of the team or a person. It is the case with Bigil as well. As the women’s football team, hailing from underprivileged backgrounds, clinch victory, the end credits roll and we see the words ‘Dedicated to women.’ The supporting characters played by Amritha Aiyer, Reba Monica John, Kathir, Indhuja Ravichandran, Varsha Bollamma and Yogi Babu do their best and their contribution gives the much-needed depth to the film. The main issue with Bigil is its predictability. You can easily guess the characters who will end up dead and who get maimed. Despite all that, Bigil is a treat for Vijay’s ardent fans.

Vijay shines in a colourful sports drama that just grazes the goal post

An emotionally-strong tale from the Atlee-Vijay combo which could have used better writing and trimming.

Thalapathy Vijay ROCKS! Mass entertainer with good message

Bigil has been produced by AGS Entertainment on a whopping budget of Rs 180 crore.
